A common remedy for colds and coughs, elderberries are known for their medicinal properties. Elderberry trees / shrubs are fairly pest resistant, adaptable to many types of soils, and can thrive with at least 6 hours of sunlight. You can expect berries in year two or three.


  • Bob Gordon: a good variety for juices
  • Adams: flowers are stunning in floral arrangements and berries taste great in jams and jellies
  • Johns: Early and prolific producer of berries
  • Marge: Stands up well to heat, producing large berries
  • Ranch: Can handle extreme temperature swings; shorter plant for easier harvesting
  • Black American: native wild elderberry so it's very hardy and needs very little care
